Σήμα κινδύνου για τη ρύπανση των επιφανειακών υδάτων της Ελλάδας εκπέμπουν οι ειδικοί, καθώς διαπιστώνονται υψηλές συγκεντρώσεις επικίνδυνων ουσιών. Χαρακτηριστικό είναι το γεγονός ότι πρόσφατη μελέτη αναφέρει πως 16 στις 18 ελληνικές λίμνες βρίσκονται σε μέτρια έως κακή οικολογική κατάσταση. Από στοιχεία που παρουσιάστηκαν στην Επιτροπή Περιβάλλοντος της Βουλής προκύπτει ότι υπερβάσεις μολύβδου, νικελίου, υδραργύρου και τοξικών ενώσεων έχουν καταγραφεί σε μεγάλους ποταμούς και λίμνες. Turtles killed 'in millions' by fishing gear

Millions of marine turtles have been killed over the past two decades through entrapment in fishing gear, according to a global survey. Described as the first global synthesis of existing data, the study found especially high rates of "bycatch" in the Mediterranean and eastern Pacific. Six of the seven sea turtle types are on the Red List of Threatened Species.
Writing in the journal Conservation Letters, researchers advocate much greater use of gear safe for turtles. Read more...

Canadian Cement Plant Becomes First to Capture CO2 in Algae

A Canadian company called Pond Biofuels is capturing CO2 emissions from a cement plant in algae — algae the company ultimately plans on using to make biofuel.
It’s no secret that the process of manufacturing cement is both energy intensive and dirty. Global cement production alone emits roughly five percent of greenhouse gas emissions annually, both as a byproduct of limestone decarbonation (60%) and from the burning of fossil fuels in the cement kilns (40%). UK sets up Chagos Islands marine reserve

The UK government has created the world's largest marine reserve around the Chagos Islands. The reserve would cover a 545,000-sq-km area around the Indian Ocean archipelago, regarded as one of the world's richest marine ecosystems.
This will include an area where commercial fishing will be banned. But islanders, who were evicted to make way for the US air base on the island of Diego Garcia, say a reserve would effectively bar them from returning. Read more...

«Πολλοί αετοί, γύπες και άλλα αρπακτικά πεθαίνουν στις φωλιές τους ή σε απρόσιτες ορεινές περιοχές χωρίς ποτέ να τους ανιχνεύσουμε», λέει στα «ΝΕΑ» ο δρ Σταύρος Ξηρουχάκης από το Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας του Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης. «Ειδικά οι γύπες που μεταφέρουν τη λεία τους στον πρόλοβο (τον μικρό σάκο κάτω από τον λαιμό), επιστρέφουν στη φωλιά τους και ταΐζουν πολλές φορές τους νεοσσούς τους με δηλητηριασμένη τροφή. New Aggressive National Fuel Economy Standards Set for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks

No fooling, the DOT and EPA, in response to one of the Obama Administration's top priorities, have jointly established aggressive new federal rules that will significantly increase the fuel economy of all passenger cars and light trucks sold in the United States. They have also established new federal rules that would for the first time ever, set national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards for these vehicles. The new rules are forecast to save the average buyer of a 2016 model year car $3,000 over the lifetime of the vehicle. EPA estimates that nationally, it has the potential to conserve about 1.8 billion barrels of oil and reduce nearly a billion tons of GHG emissions over the lives of the vehicles. Read more...

Ενεργειακά ανεξάρτητοι από τη ΔΕΗ θα είναι σύντομα οι περίπου τρεισήμισι χιλιάδες κάτοικοι του Δήμου Νικηφόρου Δράμας, μιας αγροτικής περιοχής που θα αποτελέσει πρότυπο πάρκο ανεμογεννητριών και φωτοβολταϊκών, μοναδικό για τα ελληνικά δεδομένα. UN body to look at meat and climate link

UN specialists are to look again at the contribution of meat production to climate change, after claims that an earlier report exaggerated the link.
A 2006 report concluded meat production was responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions - more than transport. The report has been cited by people campaigning for a more vegetable-based diet, including Sir Paul McCartney. Catching fog with nets is the solution to water scarcity for people who live beyond the reach of utility lines in this sandy hillside shantytown overlooking Peru's capital, Lima.
Lima, which along with Cairo is one of the world's two driest capitals, gets only a few drops of rain each year. But thick fog from the Pacific Ocean blankets the coastal hills surrounding the city for eight months a year as hot tropical sun mixes with cold waters of the Humboldt current. Using nets similar to those used in volleyball, residents condense fog, drip-by-drip, into drainage pipes running down the hill into tanks that store hundreds of liters of water for irrigation, bathing and cooking. Scotland gets serious about sea power

cotland has approved ten marine energy projects that leaders predict could provide electricity for one-third of the nation’s homes by 2020 and make Scotland the world leader in wave energy. The government awarded leases to companies to construct six wave energy projects and four tidal projects off the Scottish coast in what experts say would be the first developments of their kind on a large commercial scale. Construction would cost £4 billion ($6.1 billion) and require another £1 billion ($1.53 billion) in government funding to upgrade the national electric grid. Read more...

Blue Fin Tuna Decline and Fall

The Atlantic blue fin tuna is one of the largest, fastest, and most gorgeously colored of all the world’s fishes. Their torpedo shaped, streamlined bodies are built for speed and endurance. Their coloring (metallic blue on top and silver white on the bottom) helps camouflage them from above and below. They have an average size of 6.5 feet and 550 pounds. Unfortunately for them they are also delicious and may be on the brink of extinction due to overfishing. European Union ambassadors agreed to propose protecting blue fin tuna as an endangered species on March 10, a move that would effectively ban international trade in the species. Read more...

Natural Gas drilling chemicals a concern

President Barack Obama's top environmental adviser urged the natural gas industry on Tuesday to disclose the chemicals it uses in drilling, warning that the development of massive U.S. shale gas reserves could be held back otherwise.
Joseph Aldy, special assistant to the president for energy and the environment, said concerns about water contamination from drilling chemicals could lead to states requiring disclosure and that could deter additional investment. Read more...

With the click of a mouse, the new feature allows you to plot the best (and flattest!) ride from Point A to Point B. Several cities, including New York, Minneapolis, San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, have bike-specific mapping sites. Sales of ivory and a possible ban on trading bluefin tuna top the agenda for the two-week CITES meeting that opens this weekend in Doha, Qatar. CITES - the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species - will set a precedent if it votes to ban trading in a lucrative fish such as bluefin. The US and EU back the proposal, but Japan is set against.

West Africa mangroves impacted by salt extraction

Salt is precious in poverty-stricken coastal West Africa, but conservation experts say efforts to extract it are laying waste to mangrove swamps, causing erosion and ravaging fish stocks.
In Sierra Leone, one of Africa's poorest nations still recovering from a 1991-2002 civil war, lawmakers are preparing a bill to join a seven-nation charter to protect the region's mangrove forests. Conservation group Wetlands International says the initiative is essential for West Africa to save the 800,000 hectares (2 million acres) of mangrove swamps it has left, less than a third of the 3 million hectares it started with. Insect that fights Japanese knotweed to be released

A tiny Japanese insect that could help the fight against an aggressive superweed has been given the go-ahead for a trial release in England. Since Japanese knotweed was introduced to the UK it has rapidly spread, and the plant currently costs over £150m a year to control and clear.
But scientists say a natural predator in the weed's native home of Japan could also help to control it here. This is the first time that biocontrol - the use of a "natural predator" to control a pest - has been used in the EU to fight a weed. Read more...

Ένας από τους ακτιβιστές της ομάδας Street Ρanthers για τα δικαιώματα των πεζών κόλλησε προχθές το βράδυ το γνωστό αυτοκόλλητο, «είμαι γάιδαρος! Παρκάρω όπου γουστάρω», σε ένα αυτοκίνητο που ήταν παράνομα σταθμευμένο πάνω σε πεζοδρόμιο στο Γκάζι. Ο οδηγός του αυτοκινήτου όμως, που εκείνη την ώρα έτρωγε σε εστιατόριο της περιοχής, όχι μόνο δεν κατάλαβε το λάθος του αλλά επιτέθηκε- βοηθούμενος και από τον ιδιοκτήτη του καταστήματος- στον ακτιβιστή με γροθιές και κλωτσιές. Climate change affecting Kenya's coffee output

Climate change has affected Kenyan coffee production through unpredictable rainfall patterns and excessive droughts, making crop management and disease control a nightmare, a researcher said on Thursday.
Intermittent rainfall in the 2007/08 crop year, for example, caused a terrible bout of the Coffee Berry Disease that cut Kenyan output 23 percent to 42,000 metric tons as farmers were caught out by rains and did not protect their crop in time. Read more...

British Airways plans to build a plant that will produce biojet fuel from plasma gasification of biomass, reports The Engineer. Touted as Europe’s first sustainable jet-fuel plant, the facility will process all types of biomass and residue feedstock that will primarily be sourced from local waste management facilities, according to the article.
In partnership with the Solena Group, British Airways says the jet-fuel plant will help power its fleet from 2014, and help the company meet its goal to reduce net carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2050, reports New Energy Focus. Read more...

Wild tigers in China declining - habitat destruction, poaching to blame

China has an estimated 50 or fewer tigers left living in the wild, but efforts to stabilize one population in the bleak northeast are starting to pay off, a conservationist said on Monday.
Tigers once roamed huge swathes of China, right up to the now booming east coast. Their population has collapsed due to habitat destruction on the back of rapid economic development and poaching for tiger products to use in traditional medicine. Read more...

At 13,000 megawatts of new wind energy installed, China led all nations in adding wind turbines in 2009, according to the Global Wind Energy Council.

The U.S. installed 9,922 MW worth, followed by Spain at 2,459 MW, Germany at 1,917 MW and India at 1,271 MW. The U.S. retains the top spot in cumulative wind energy capacity, at 35,159 MW, or 22 percent of the world’s wind energy capacity. Read more...

Belo Monte dam approved in Brazil's Amazon

Brazil's government has granted an environmental license for the construction of a controversial hydroelectric dam in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, the Environment Minister said on Monday. Saudi Arabia to Replace Oil with Sun Power for Desalination Plants

Up to now, the more than 28 desalination plants scattered around the Kingdom have had to rely of fossil fuel, most notably fuel oil, to provide to power to run the equipment used to extract salt and other minerals from sea water.
Much of this may be changing, however, as Saudi Arabia is now interested in using solar energy to provide the power needed, instead of oil. According to an article on the UAE Top News media site, the Kingdom is now planning to build solar energy based desalination plants in order to save on energy costs, as well as be in tune with new environmental polices. This might be to secure membership in the International Renewable Energy Agency, otherwise known as IRENA. Read more...

Επικίνδυνο για την υγεία, εξαιτίας της νιτρορρύπανσης, είναι το νερό από τις γεωτρήσεις και τα πηγάδια στα Μεσόγεια όπως και σε άλλες επτά περιοχές (Θεσσαλία, Κωπαΐδα, Αργολίδα, λεκάνη Πηνειού, κάμπος Θεσσαλονίκης, λεκάνη Στρυμόνα και πεδιάδα Άρτας), οι οποίες έχουν και επισήμως χαρακτηριστεί ευπρόσβλητες ζώνες. Η νιτρορρύπανση στην Ελλάδα έχει χτυπήσει κόκκινο. Ενδεικτικό είναι το γεγονός πως για τα υπόγεια νερά, σε 42% από τα 418 σημεία όπου γίνεται δειγματοληψία σε όλη την Ελλάδα η ετήσια συγκέντρωση των νιτρικών υπερβαίνει τα 50 mg ανά λίτρο, που είναι το αποδεκτό όριο. UK planning to reintroduce insects

When one thinks of reintroducing wildlife, one usually thinks of big charismatic mammals, such as wolves or beaver, or desperate birds like the Californian condor. But the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) in Scotland is going one step further to save the UK's unique ecology with plans to reintroduce four species of dwindling insects. Toyota Motor Corp.'s Prius was Japan's best-selling car last year, the first time a hybrid has topped annual sales.
The Japan Automobile Dealers Association reported nearly 209,000 Prius cars sold in 2009, with buyers willing to wait up to six months for deliveries. Hybrids make up about 10 percent of new vehicle sales in Japan. Read more...

Η δύναμη των κυμάτων που σκάνε στα παράλια του Βελγίου και της Ολλανδίας, θα ενωθεί με τα υδροηλεκτρικά φράγματα των φιορδ της Νορβηγίας: Με λίγα λόγια, το πρώτο ηλεκτρικό δίκτυο της Ευρώπης ειδικά για ανανεώσιμες πηγές ενέργειας θα γίνει πολιτική πραγματικότητα αυτόν το μήνα, καθώς εννέα χώρες της γηραιάς ηπείρου ολοκληρώνουν τα σχέδιά τους για συνένωση των σχετικών εγκαταστάσεων που διατηρούν γύρω από τη Βόρεια Θάλασσα. Global Carbon Trading Volumes Grew 68% in 2009

The global carbon trading market grew 68 percent last year compared with the previous year, despite a global economic downturn. But the value of the market remained virtually unchanged after carbon prices fell, averaging $16.40 in 2009.
That’s down from $27.15 in 2008, according to a new report from Point Carbon, reports the New York Times. The report shows the global carbon market reached $136 billion in 2009, up from $133 billion in 2008, and $58 billion in 2007, reports the New York Times. Read more...

«Η ενέργεια που καταναλώνεται για τον φωτισμό των δήμων και των μεγάλων οδικών αρτηριών φτάνει τις 2 δισεκατομμύρια κιλοβατώρες ετησίως. Έχουμε υπολογίσει ότι μπορούμε να επιτύχουμε τουλάχιστον 40% εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας με σωστή, προγραμματισμένη δουλειά. «Αυτό σημαίνει ότι δεν θα χρειάζεται να καταναλώνουμε 800 εκατομμύρια κιλοβατώρες ετησίως για εξωτερικό φωτισμό», λέει στα «ΝΕΑ» ο ταμίας της Ελληνικής Επιτροπής Φωτισμού κ. Χρυσόστομος Χρηστίδης και επισημαίνει ότι σε βάθος έως και 7 χρόνων θα μπορούσε λόγω της εξοικονόμησης να αποφευχθεί η κατασκευή μίας μονάδας παραγωγής ενέργειας ισχύος 200 ΜW, η οποία κοστίζει περίπου 200 εκατομμύρια ευρώ. Australia, Belgium Find More Cases of Carbon Fraud

More carbon fraud cases are popping up around the globe including Australia and Belgium as government watchdog organizations step up efforts to monitor the nascent green business sector.
As an example, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says it is closely watching the green business sector, reports SmartCompany. ACCC recently forced a green power company, Global Green Plan, to purchase carbon credits it had promised to buy on behalf of customers, but never did, and is currently pursuing action against carbon capture company Prime Carbon over allegedly misleading claims made by the firm, according to the article. Sweden culls its resurgent wolves

Swedish hunters have begun culling wolves for the first time in 45 years after parliament ruled that numbers needed to be reduced again. More than half the quota of 27 may have died on the first day alone with nine shot dead in Dalarna and up to nine killed in Varmland, Swedish radio says. Hunters have until 15 February to complete the cull, which will leave Sweden with an estimated 210 wolves. Read more...
