Three-quarters of English Channel sea birds contain toxic levels of plastic

Data from studies monitoring the amount of consumer plastic eaten by sea birds suggest that levels in the North Sea are well above targets... and the figures are rising. For the most recent monitoring period, the target amount was exceeded in well over half the birds studied, with the English Channel being the worst affected region with 74% of birds over the threshold. Σήμα κινδύνου για τη ρύπανση των επιφανειακών υδάτων της Ελλάδας εκπέμπουν οι ειδικοί, καθώς διαπιστώνονται υψηλές συγκεντρώσεις επικίνδυνων ουσιών. Χαρακτηριστικό είναι το γεγονός ότι πρόσφατη μελέτη αναφέρει πως 16 στις 18 ελληνικές λίμνες βρίσκονται σε μέτρια έως κακή οικολογική κατάσταση. Από στοιχεία που παρουσιάστηκαν στην Επιτροπή Περιβάλλοντος της Βουλής προκύπτει ότι υπερβάσεις μολύβδου, νικελίου, υδραργύρου και τοξικών ενώσεων έχουν καταγραφεί σε μεγάλους ποταμούς και λίμνες. Υπηρεσία της Κομισιόν κατέγραψε όλες τις εστίες ρύπανσης στην Ελλάδα

Πάνω από 56 τόνοι ουσιών που χαρακτηρίζονται από τους ειδικούς ως «ιδιαίτερα τοξικές» απελευθερώθηκαν στον ελληνικό αέρα το 2007 σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία του νεοσύστατου ευρωπαϊκού μητρώου καταγραφής ρύπων, ενώ άλλοι 3,5 τόνοι κατέληξαν στο νερό. Στην ηλεκτρονική υπηρεσία της Κομισιόν και του Ευρωπαϊκού Οργανισμού Περιβάλλοντος, που άρχισε να λειτουργεί αυτή την εβδομάδα στη διεύθυνση http://prtr.ec.europa.eu, στοιχειοθετείται με αριθμούς και ονόματα επιχειρήσεων ότι οι περιοχές της Ελλάδας στις οποίες απελευθερώνονται οι μεγαλύτερες ποσότητες και «ποικιλίες» επικίνδυνων χημικών είναι η Δυτική Αττική, η Δυτική Μακεδονία, η Θεσσαλονίκη, η Κόρινθος, η Μαγνησία, η Ανατολική Στερεά Ελλάδα. In 1993, a Swedish researcher calculated that the ingredients of a typical Swedish breakfast-apple, bread, butter, cheese, coffee, cream, orange juice, sugar-traveled a distance equal to the circumference of the Earth before reaching the Scandinavian table. In 2005, a researcher in Iowa found that the milk, sugar, and strawberries that go into a carton of strawberry yogurt collectively journeyed 2,211 miles (3,558 kilometers) just to get to the processing plant. As the local-food movement has come of age, this concept of "food miles" (or "-kilometers")-roughly, the distance food travels from farm to plate-has come to dominate the discussion, particularly in the United States, the United Kingdom, and parts of Western Europe. Shampoo in the water supply triggers growth of deadly drug-resistant bugs

The warning has been made by Birmingham and Warwick university scientists, who say disinfectants and other products washed into sewers and rivers are triggering the growth of drug-resistant microbes. Soil samples from many areas have been found to contain high levels of bacteria with antibiotic-resistant genes, the scientists have discovered - raising fears that these may have already been picked up by humans. China launches vast water clean-up

A project to improve water quality in China has been launched by the government, which says it is the largest expenditure on environmental protection since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949.
The project, which has an estimated budget of more than 30 billion Chinese yuan (around 4.4 billion US dollars) over 12 years, aims to counter the deteriorating water quality affecting millions of Chinese people and their livelihoods. Read more...

Το DDΤ δηλητηριάζει ακόμα

Ρυπασμένα με εντομοκτόνα της γενιάς του DDΤ, που σταμάτησαν να χρησιμοποιούνται εδώ και τουλάχιστον 35 χρόνια, εξακολουθούν να είναι τα νερά σε κάποιες λίμνες και ποτάμια της Ελλάδας. Ήταν μια αναπάντεχη όσο και ανησυχητική διαπίστωση για τους επιστήμονες του Πανεπιστημίου Ιωαννίνων που πραγματοποίησαν μια μεγάλη έρευνα για τις συγκεντρώσεις φυτοφαρμάκων στα επιφανειακά νερά της Ελλάδας. Την ίδια έκπληξη μάλιστα δοκίμασαν και αρκετοί ειδικοί που πριν από μερικές ημέρες παρακολούθησαν τα αποτελέσματα της ερευνητικής εργασίας στο πλαίσιο του συνεδρίου που διοργάνωσε η Ένωση Ελλήνων Χημικών στην Αθήνα με τίτλο «Τρόφιμα και Περιβάλλον». The Dirty Side of a “Green” Industry

As people worldwide increasingly feel the heat of climate change, many are applauding the skyrocketing growth China’s fledging solar-cell industry. Solar power and other “green” technologies, by providing electricity from renewable energy sources like the sun and wind, create hope for a world free of coal-burning pollution and natural resource depletion. A recent Washington Post article, however, has revealed that China’s booming solar industry is not as green as one might expect.
