Ivory and bluefin tuna top agenda at UN wildlife summit

Sales of ivory and a possible ban on trading bluefin tuna top the agenda for the two-week CITES meeting that opens this weekend in Doha, Qatar. CITES - the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species - will set a precedent if it votes to ban trading in a lucrative fish such as bluefin. The US and EU back the proposal, but Japan is set against.
Conservation groups are also hoping for increased protection on sharks, coral, polar bears, lizards and amphibians. Read more...

Στη Βρετανία ο τόνος είναι το ψάρι με τη δεύτερη μεγαλύτερη κατανάλωση (πρώτος είναι ο σολομός). Στους Αμερικανούς αρέσει επίσης πολύ. Στην Ιταλία είναι ένα συνηθισμένο φαγητό, το ίδιο στην Ισπανία, στη Γαλλία και στη Γερμανία. Οι Γιαπωνέζοι όμως είναι οι μεγαλύτεροι λάτρεις του τόνου και ιδιαίτερα του κυανόπτερου, που στις ψαραγορές του Τόκιο φτάνει τα 150 ευρώ το κιλό. Και αυτή η λαιμαργία της Ιαπωνίας για τον πιο σπάνιο και πιο εκλεκτό από τους τόνους είναι που έφερε φέτος την πρώτη μεγάλη κρίση στο είδος. Η υπεραλιεία έχει οδηγήσει τον κυανόπτερο του Ατλαντικού στα πρόθυρα της εξαφάνισης. Θα έχει εξαλειφθεί μέσα σε μόλις τρία χρόνια, σύμφωνα με το Παγκόσμιο Ταμείο για τη Φύση (WWF). Europe sits on damning bluefin tuna report

European fisheries report demonstrating continuing widespread infringements by bluefin tuna fleets despite increased fleet surveillance in the Mediterranean has been delayed until after the conclusion of next week's key international tuna commission meeting to decide on a new management regime for the fishery.The existence of the report, revealed today by The Economist, undermines Europe's promise of support for strong action possibly including temporary closure of the fishery at the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) meeting in Marrakech, Morocco. EU agrees quota cuts to save bluefin tuna

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - EU governments agreed a 15-year plan on Tuesday that set strict curbs on fishing for bluefin tuna, cutting quotas and tightening port inspections to stop the species from heading for extinction.
Prized by sushi and sashimi lovers, bluefin tuna has seen its numbers fall sharply in eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean waters. In Japan, the major market for the species, a single fish can command prices of up to $100,000.
"The difference now is that it (plan) is permanent, not temporary, and nobody is arguing any more about quotas. We now have complete clarity and are set up for 15 years from 2007," one official at the European Commission told reporters. Read more...

Στην αναστολή της αλίευσης του τόνου στη Μεσόγειο και τον Ανατολικό Ατλαντικό αποφάσισε να προχωρήσει η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, γεγονός που αναμένεται να πλήξει και Έλληνες ψαράδες.
