Seining Salmon in the Seine?

Salmon are returning to the Seine after an absence of almost a century as water in the river that runs through Paris has become cleaner in recent years, French scientists said.
Once numerous in the river, Atlantic salmon disappeared from the Seine in the early 20th century, partly due to pollution from Paris sewers.
But scientists celebrated an improvement in water quality in the Seine that has tempted the protected species back to Paris. Read more...

Extinction 'by man not climate'

The extinction of many ancient species may be due to humans rather than climate change, experts say. Large prehistoric animals in Tasmania may have been wiped out by human hunting and not temperature changes, a team of international scientists argue. Beavers could be released in 2009

Plans are in the pipeline for beavers to be released into the Scottish wild for the first time in 500 years. Wildlife bodies have asked the Scottish Government for a licence to allow about 20 beavers to be set free in Argyll in 2009.

EU agrees quota cuts to save bluefin tuna

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - EU governments agreed a 15-year plan on Tuesday that set strict curbs on fishing for bluefin tuna, cutting quotas and tightening port inspections to stop the species from heading for extinction.
Prized by sushi and sashimi lovers, bluefin tuna has seen its numbers fall sharply in eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean waters. In Japan, the major market for the species, a single fish can command prices of up to $100,000.
"The difference now is that it (plan) is permanent, not temporary, and nobody is arguing any more about quotas. We now have complete clarity and are set up for 15 years from 2007," one official at the European Commission told reporters. Read more...

Στην αναστολή της αλίευσης του τόνου στη Μεσόγειο και τον Ανατολικό Ατλαντικό αποφάσισε να προχωρήσει η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, γεγονός που αναμένεται να πλήξει και Έλληνες ψαράδες. Διακόσια πουλιά, κυρίως φλαμίγκο και αβοκέτες, βρέθηκαν νεκρά στη λίμνη Κορώνεια, λόγω της υπερσυγκέντρωσης τοξικών ουσιών από την πτώση της στάθμης του νερού. Η μείωση του νερού και οι υψηλές θερμοκρασίες αύξησαν την πυκνότητα των επιβλαβών ουσιών που φυσιολογογικά στη λίμνη, εξήγησε ο Ευάγγελος Τρευλόπουλος, προϊστάμενος του τμήματος Υγείας Ζώων στη Διεύθυνσης Κτηνιατρικής της νομαρχίας Θεσσαλονίκης. Απορία Διαχειριστή: Κάθε λίγο και λιγάκι διαβάζω καταγγελίες από Μη Κυβερνητικές Περιβαλλοντικές Οργανώσεις για την άθλια κατάσταση σε πλήθος "προστατευόμενων" περιοχών, οι οποίες μάλιστα έχουν Φορείς Διαχείρισης (ενδεικτικά αναφέρω: Ζάκυνθος, Σχοινιάς, Κορώνεια...). Το ενδιαφέρον είναι ότι αυτοί που καταγγέλουν μετέχουν στα ΔΣ των εν λόγω Φορέων Διαχείρισης, οι οποίοι (Φορείς), προφανώς, έχουν αποτύχει στο έργο τους. Το 'Γιατί;' έχουν αποτύχει ας μην μας απασχολήσει προς το παρόν.
Αλλά, θα μπορούσε κάποιος να απαντήσει σε ένα άλλο 'Γιατί;':
Γιατί όλοι αυτοί οι μετέχοντες στα ΔΣ -και ειδικά οι εκπρόσωποι των ΜΚ-ΠΟ- δεν ΠΑΡΑΙΤΟΥΝΤΑΙ, ΚΑΤΑΓΓΕΛΟΝΤΑΣ όποιους θεωρούν υπεύθυνους γι' αυτό το χάλι;
Γιατί δεν σηκώνονται να φύγουν, ΒΑΖΟΝΤΑΣ ΣΥΓΚΕΚΡΙΜΕΝΟΥΣ ΟΡΟΥΣ για την επιστροφή τους;
Γιατί συνεχίζουν να συμμετέχουν σε αυτούς τους -de facto- ανεπιτυχείς μηχανισμούς;
