Δώδεκα κράτη της Ασίας και η Ρωσία δεσμεύθηκαν να διπλασιάσουν τον αριθμό των τίγρεων στα εδάφη τους μέχρι το 2022, να πατάξουν τη λαθροθηρία που εξαφάνισε τα μεγάλα αιλουροειδή και να απαγορεύσουν την κατασκευή γεφυρών και δρόμων που θα μπορούσαν να απειλήσουν το εύθραυστο οικοσύστημά τους.

China Edges U.S. in 2009 Wind Installations

At 13,000 megawatts of new wind energy installed, China led all nations in adding wind turbines in 2009, according to the Global Wind Energy Council.

The U.S. installed 9,922 MW worth, followed by Spain at 2,459 MW, Germany at 1,917 MW and India at 1,271 MW. The U.S. retains the top spot in cumulative wind energy capacity, at 35,159 MW, or 22 percent of the world’s wind energy capacity. Read more...

Belo Monte dam approved in Brazil's Amazon

Brazil's government has granted an environmental license for the construction of a controversial hydroelectric dam in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, the Environment Minister said on Monday. The $17 billion project on the Xingu River in the northern state of Para is to help the fast-growing Latin American country cope with soaring demand for electricity but has raised concern over its likely impact on the environment and on native Indians. Saudi Arabia to Replace Oil with Sun Power for Desalination Plants

Up to now, the more than 28 desalination plants scattered around the Kingdom have had to rely of fossil fuel, most notably fuel oil, to provide to power to run the equipment used to extract salt and other minerals from sea water.
Much of this may be changing, however, as Saudi Arabia is now interested in using solar energy to provide the power needed, instead of oil. According to an article on the UAE Top News media site, the Kingdom is now planning to build solar energy based desalination plants in order to save on energy costs, as well as be in tune with new environmental polices. This might be to secure membership in the International Renewable Energy Agency, otherwise known as IRENA. Read more...

Επικίνδυνο για την υγεία, εξαιτίας της νιτρορρύπανσης, είναι το νερό από τις γεωτρήσεις και τα πηγάδια στα Μεσόγεια όπως και σε άλλες επτά περιοχές (Θεσσαλία, Κωπαΐδα, Αργολίδα, λεκάνη Πηνειού, κάμπος Θεσσαλονίκης, λεκάνη Στρυμόνα και πεδιάδα Άρτας), οι οποίες έχουν και επισήμως χαρακτηριστεί ευπρόσβλητες ζώνες. Η νιτρορρύπανση στην Ελλάδα έχει χτυπήσει κόκκινο. Ενδεικτικό είναι το γεγονός πως για τα υπόγεια νερά, σε 42% από τα 418 σημεία όπου γίνεται δειγματοληψία σε όλη την Ελλάδα η ετήσια συγκέντρωση των νιτρικών υπερβαίνει τα 50 mg ανά λίτρο, που είναι το αποδεκτό όριο. When one thinks of reintroducing wildlife, one usually thinks of big charismatic mammals, such as wolves or beaver, or desperate birds like the Californian condor. But the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) in Scotland is going one step further to save the UK's unique ecology with plans to reintroduce four species of dwindling insects. Global Carbon Trading Volumes Grew 68% in 2009

The global carbon trading market grew 68 percent last year compared with the previous year, despite a global economic downturn. But the value of the market remained virtually unchanged after carbon prices fell, averaging $16.40 in 2009.
That’s down from $27.15 in 2008, according to a new report from Point Carbon, reports the New York Times. The report shows the global carbon market reached $136 billion in 2009, up from $133 billion in 2008, and $58 billion in 2007, reports the New York Times. Read more...

«Η ενέργεια που καταναλώνεται για τον φωτισμό των δήμων και των μεγάλων οδικών αρτηριών φτάνει τις 2 δισεκατομμύρια κιλοβατώρες ετησίως. Έχουμε υπολογίσει ότι μπορούμε να επιτύχουμε τουλάχιστον 40% εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας με σωστή, προγραμματισμένη δουλειά. «Αυτό σημαίνει ότι δεν θα χρειάζεται να καταναλώνουμε 800 εκατομμύρια κιλοβατώρες ετησίως για εξωτερικό φωτισμό», λέει στα «ΝΕΑ» ο ταμίας της Ελληνικής Επιτροπής Φωτισμού κ. Χρυσόστομος Χρηστίδης και επισημαίνει ότι σε βάθος έως και 7 χρόνων θα μπορούσε λόγω της εξοικονόμησης να αποφευχθεί η κατασκευή μίας μονάδας παραγωγής ενέργειας ισχύος 200 ΜW, η οποία κοστίζει περίπου 200 εκατομμύρια ευρώ. Australia, Belgium Find More Cases of Carbon Fraud

More carbon fraud cases are popping up around the globe including Australia and Belgium as government watchdog organizations step up efforts to monitor the nascent green business sector.
As an example, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says it is closely watching the green business sector, reports SmartCompany. ACCC recently forced a green power company, Global Green Plan, to purchase carbon credits it had promised to buy on behalf of customers, but never did, and is currently pursuing action against carbon capture company Prime Carbon over allegedly misleading claims made by the firm, according to the article. Sweden culls its resurgent wolves

Swedish hunters have begun culling wolves for the first time in 45 years after parliament ruled that numbers needed to be reduced again. More than half the quota of 27 may have died on the first day alone with nine shot dead in Dalarna and up to nine killed in Varmland, Swedish radio says. Οι δήμοι θα πληρώνουν ανάλογα με τα απορρίμματα που παράγουν οι πολίτες και όχι με βάση τον πληθυσμό τους. Αυτό προβλέπει νομοθετική παρέμβαση του υπουργείου Περιβάλλοντος, που στοχεύει να ασκήσει πίεση στους δήμους ώστε να εργαστούν για να μειώσουν τις ποσότητες απορριμμάτων που παράγουν οι δημότες.

Netherlands Advances Plan to Tax Miles Driven

Επιτρέπεται ξανά το κυνήγι

Τη συνέχιση του κυνηγιού, χωρίς άλλα απρόοπτα, μέχρι το τέλος της φετινής κυνηγετικής περιόδου προβλέπει η νέα ρυθμιστική απόφαση για τη θήρα που υπέγραψε χτες η υπουργός Περιβάλλοντος, Ενέργειας και Κλιματικής Αλλαγής (ΥΠΕΚΑ) κ. Τ. Μπιρμπίλη.

Η νέα ρύθμιση είναι εναρμονισμένη με την πρόσφατη απόφαση του ΣτΕ που απαγορεύει το κυνήγι σε όλες τις περιοχές για τις οποίες έχουν εκδοθεί μέχρι τώρα- και είναι σε ισχύ- δασικές απαγορευτικές αποφάσεις λόγω πυρκαγιών και όχι μόνο για τις περιοχές που κάηκαν το 2009. Υπενθυμίζεται ότι έπειτα από σχετική προσφυγή, το ΣτΕ ανέστειλε πριν από λίγες ημέρες την απόφαση του υπουργείου Αγροτικής Ανάπτυξης με την οποία ρυθμιζόταν το κυνήγι την τρέχουσα περίοδο 2009-2010.

Έχουν πληρώσει. Όπως αναγνωρίζει το ΥΠΕΚΑ, η χτεσινή απόφαση για τη συνέχιση του κυνηγιού υπαγορεύτηκε και από την ανάγκη «να αποφευχθούν περαιτέρω νομικές εμπλοκές από το ότι οι 230.000 Έλληνες κυνηγοί έχουν ήδη πληρώσει τα προβλεπόμενα από τη νομοθεσία ποσά έκδοσης των αδειών τους, καθώς και ότι στην παρούσα κρίσιμη για την ελληνική οικονομία φάση που διανύουμε θα ήταν άδικο να στερήσουμε τις μικρομεσαίες ξενοδοχειακές και συναφείς επιχειρήσεις της ορεινής κυρίως Ελλάδας, που εξαρτώνται από τους κυνηγούς, από έναν σημαντικό γι΄ αυτούς οικονομικό πόρο».

Και μερικές προσωπικές μου απορίες:

1. Το ΣτΕ απαγόρευσε (προσωρινά) το κυνήγι στις 11/12 γιατί δεν υπήρχε συνολική μελέτη για τα θηράματα. Μια εβδομάδα μετά έγινε η μελέτη;

2. Η ιδέα να επιστραφούν τα χρήματα που αναλογούν, στους κυνηγούς δεν πέρασε από κανενός το μυαλό;

3. Για να ενισχύσουμε την οικονομία της 'ορεινής κυρίως Ελλάδας' -αλλά και τον προϋπολογισμό!- μήπως να βγάζαμε σε πλειστηριασμό άδειες κυνηγιού ΚΑΙ για τα απειλούμενα είδη (π.χ λύκους, αρκούδες κτλ); Γιατί να σκοτώνονται τσάμπα στην Εγνατία;

4. Ευτυχώς που αποκτήσαμε Υπουργείο ΠΕΡΙΒΑΛΛΟΝΤΟΣ -έτσι τώρα δε χρειάζεται να γελοιοποιεί τις αποφάσεις του ΣτΕ για το κυνήγι το Υπουργείο Αγροτικής Ανάπτυξης -όπως έκανε τόσα χρόνια τώρα...

UN welcomes climate summit deal

It may not sound like "tree-hugging," but cutting down a real tree for Christmas is actually greener than going with the artificial kind. "It is a little counterintuitive to people," said Clint Springer, a biologist at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia.
Because of concerns over deforestation around the world, many people naturally worry that buying a real tree might contribute to that problem, Springer says. Chicago Canal Poisoned to Keep Invasive Carp Out of Great Lakes

CHICAGO -- State and Federal agencies have begun poisoning a nearly 6-mile stretch of the Chicago Sanitary Ship Canal to kill off invasive Asian carp while maintenance is performed on an electrical barrier intended to keep the fish out of Lake Michigan. The Lake’s ecosystem is already irreparably damaged by invasive species making the introduction of these new invasive fish a dire threat to the entire Great Lakes system. The fish can grow to 100 pounds in size and out-compete native species in an ecosystem due to their prolific breeding and ability to filter feed 40% of their body weight on a daily basis. The e-mail archives stolen last month from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia (UEA), UK, have been greeted by the climate-change-denialist fringe as a propaganda windfall (see page 551). To these denialists, the scientists' scathing remarks about certain controversial palaeoclimate reconstructions qualify as the proverbial 'smoking gun': proof that mainstream climate researchers have systematically conspired to suppress evidence contradicting their doctrine that humans are warming the globe.
This paranoid interpretation would be laughable were it not for the fact that obstructionist politicians in the US Senate will probably use it next year as an excuse to stiffen their opposition to the country's much needed climate bill. An important report from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) shows things aren’t always what they seem to be, and that our knowledge of our complex Earth is not a good as we thought. Sometimes problems are not what they seem to be, and sometimes a problem in one sense carries unknown benefits in other senses. Professor John Turner of British Antarctic Survey is the lead editor of the review. He said,“For me the most astonishing evidence is the way that one man-made environmental impact — the ozone hole — has shielded most of Antarctica from another — global warming". Read more...

Global Study of Salmon Shows: 'Sustainable' Food Isn't So Sustainable

Popular thinking about how to improve food systems for the better often misses the point, according to the results of a three-year global study of salmon production systems. Rather than pushing for organic or land-based production, or worrying about simple metrics such as "food miles," the study finds that the world can achieve greater environmental benefits by focusing on improvements to key aspects of production and distribution.
For example, what farmed salmon are fed, how wild salmon are caught and the choice to buy frozen over fresh matters more than organic vs. conventional or wild vs. farmed when considering global scale environmental impacts such as climate change, ozone depletion, loss of critical habitat, and ocean acidification. Siberian tiger in severe decline

The last remaining population of Siberian tigers has declined significantly, according to research.
The work was carried out by the Siberian Tiger Monitoring Programme, which is coordinated by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Its report says that tiger numbers have shown a "declining trend" over the last four years, and the latest assessment counted just 56 of the animals. The organisation carries out annual tiger surveys at 16 monitoring sites scattered across the tigers' range. The monitored area represents about 15% of the animals' habitat in Russia. These surveys are done every winter, using tracks in the snow to estimate the population. Read more...

Unusually warm and cold periods in Earth's pre-industrial climate history are linked to how the oceans responded to temperature changes, say scientists.
The researchers focused particularly on intervals known as the "little ice age" and "medieval warm period". In the journal Science, they report that these climate "anomalies" were likely caused by changes to El Nino and the North Atlantic Oscillation. Όπως προκύπτει από τα στοιχεία της ΡricewaterhouseCoopers, που δημοσιεύθηκαν στις 17 Νοεμβρίου, για την παραγωγή κάθε κιλοβατώρας ηλεκτρικού ρεύματος από τη ΔΕΗ το 2008 εκπέμφθηκαν στο περιβάλλον κατά μέσο όρο 1.006 γραμμάρια διοξειδίου του άνθρακα- πρόκειται για το «μαύρο» ρεκόρ ποσοτήτων ανάμεσα στις 20 μεγαλύτερες ευρωπαϊκές επιχειρήσεις ηλεκτρισμού που μπήκαν στο μικροσκόπιο του διεθνούς οίκου. Increase in GM Crops, Resistant Weeds Lead to Dramatic Rise in Pesticide Use

The widespread use of genetically modified (GM) crops engineered to tolerate herbicides has led to a sharp increase in the use of agricultural chemicals in the U.S. This practice is creating herbicide-resistant "super weeds" and an increase in chemical residues in U.S. food, according to a new report released today by The Organic Center, the Union for Concerned Scientists, and the Center for Food Safety.
According to the report, entitled "Impacts of Genetically Engineered Crops on Pesticide Use in the United States: The First Thirteen Years," as more farmers have adopted variations of corn, soy beans, and cotton bred to tolerate weed killer in recent years, the use of herbicides has increased steadily, with herbicide use growing by 383 million pounds from 1996 to 2008, according to the report. Using the Sahara Sun to Power Europe

A $400 billon (£240 billion) plan to provide Europe with solar power from the Sahara desert moved a step closer to reality with the formation of a consortium of 12 companies to carry out the work. Known as the Desertec Industrial Initiative (DDI), the German-led consortium consists of some of country's biggest engineering and power companies, along with Munich Re, the largest reinsurer in the world. As more companies consider the environmental impact of their business travel, employees increasingly are being asked to stay in hotels that meet certain environmental standards, including “green” certification.
Some companies are going so far as to query a hotel chain about its operating practices before signing any kind of contract. Companies asking about the frequency of things such as towel washing include Oracle, KPMG and the American Institute of Architects, reports USA Today. Read more...

'Freezer plan' bid to save coral

The prospects of saving the world's coral reefs now appear so bleak that plans are being made to freeze samples to preserve them for the future.
A meeting in Denmark took evidence from researchers that most coral reefs will not survive even if tough regulations on greenhouse gases are put in place. Scientists proposed storing samples of coral species in liquid nitrogen. Read more...

London Testing a New Way to Refill Your Water Bottle

Finding a way to refill your reusable water bottle is as hard as finding a public restroom in most cities. London is testing a new-tech "fountain" to do just that in an effort to reduce the number of water bottles in trash.

But there are signs that water fountains might be making a comeback—albeit in a slightly different form factor than that to which most of us are accustomed. After banning the sale of bottled water, the Australian tourist town of Bundanoon recently installed three water-bottle refilling stations, which crank out filtered water provided by Culligan. And now London is getting its feet wet with a test of similar dispensers, called HydraChills, at a London bus station and museum, reports The Guardian. Read more...

WWF Sweden is urging its government — holding the current EU Presidency - to get behind an effective international agreement on halting forest loss as a key and highly cost effective measure on climate change.
"Sweden should follow the examples set by its northern neighbors in developing systems to halt deforestation," said WWF CEO General Lasse Gustavsson. EcoDorm offers 'green' college living

A dorm outfitted with composting toilets and kitchen cabinets made from recycled fence-posts is bringing new meaning to the concept of living "green" at college.
The EcoDorm, home to 36 undergraduates at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, N.C., was designed to be sustainable from top to bottom, or in this case, from its rainwater-collection system to a permaculture garden. Read more...
