OSLO (Reuters) - Governments must do a better job of explaining environmental taxes such as charges on driving in cities or higher electricity bills or risk a public backlash, a study showed on Friday. Governments often fail to link green taxes to their goal of curbing energy use or helping a shift to renewable energies, according to Steffen Kallbekken, of the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research in Oslo. Environment pushes EU to become Arctic player

The European Union on 20 November announced its intention to become an important stakeholder in the Arctic, mainly by promoting an environmental agenda. The European Commission also indicated that Arctic multilateral governance "could be upgraded and adjusted" to changing realities.
The Commission has decided to apply for observer status in the Arctic Council, an intergovernmental forum for countries and peoples, including the Arctic indigenous communities. Read more...

Water management: NGOs present indicators for overhaul

Beavers arrive for spring release

Four beaver families have arrived in the UK as part of a historic plan to reintroduce the mammals to Scotland for the first time in more than 400 years.
The beavers were flown into Heathrow Airport on Thursday night from Norway.
They will spend six months in quarantine before being released in Knapdale, Argyll, on a trial basis in spring 2009. Read more...

China's crops at risk from massive erosion

BEIJING (Reuters) - Over a third of China's land is being scoured by serious erosion that is putting its crops and water supply a risk, a three-year nationwide survey has found.
Soil is being washed and blown away not only in remote rural areas, but near mines, factories and even in cities, the official Xinhua agency cited the country's bio-environment security research team saying. Each year some 4.5 billion tonnes of soil are lost, threatening the country's ability to feed itself. Read more...

UK to auction carbon permits

The UK government is to auction carbon emissions permits to power firms in a sale projected to raise between 1.5 and 2bn euros (£1.2-1.6bn) by 2014.
The Treasury is being warned that if it keeps the money, it risks fuelling public cynicism about green taxes.

The new James Bond flick Quantum of Solace, which opens this weekend, has an eco-theme. Quantum of Solace continues the storyline that began with Casino Royale and finds Bond shaken (not stirred) by the death and betrayal of a loved one. He wants revenge, and he points a (Gold)finger at "eco-entrepreneur" Dominic Greene (the man with the green gun?). Played by Mathieu Amalric, Greene is the owner of an eco-hotel in the Chilean desert -- an oasis aimed at luring rich and powerful folk with fancy environmental technology. But could this Bond villain really be who he seems? (Dr.) No! In fact, the hotel and "Save the Earth" shtick is just a front for Greene's plan to seize part of South America's water supply.Aha! A brilliant plot twist: Mr. Greene is Greenewashing! I hope Bond can figure it out in time. After all, you only live twice.

Coal to remain world's top power source: IEA

LONDON (Reuters) - Coal, which produces more climate-warming carbon dioxide than oil or gas, will remain the world's main source of power until 2030 and nuclear will lose market share, the International Energy Agency said on Wednesday.
Expectations of slower economic growth have led the IEA to downgrade its 2030 world electricity demand forecast to 23,141 terawatt hours (TWh), but the share of coal generated power would rise to 44 percent by 2015 from 41 percent in 2006. It would stay at that level to 2030. Read more...

Europe sits on damning bluefin tuna report

European fisheries report demonstrating continuing widespread infringements by bluefin tuna fleets despite increased fleet surveillance in the Mediterranean has been delayed until after the conclusion of next week's key international tuna commission meeting to decide on a new management regime for the fishery.The existence of the report, revealed today by The Economist, undermines Europe's promise of support for strong action possibly including temporary closure of the fishery at the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) meeting in Marrakech, Morocco. 20χρονη αρσενική αρκούδα τραυματίστηκε θανάσιμα από Ι.Χ.

Φονική παγίδα για τις αρκούδες έχει γίνει το οδικό δίκτυο της Δυτικής Μακεδονίας. Μεγάλη αρσενική αρκούδα, βάρους περίπου 277 κιλών, προσπάθησε προχθές αργά το βράδυ να διασχίσει τμήμα του παλιού εθνικού οδικού δικτύου κοντά στην Καστοριά κι έπεσε θύμα τροχαίου ατυχήματος. Η αρκούδα- η μεγαλύτερη που έχουν εντοπίσει μέχρι σήμερα οι επιστήμονες της περιβαλλοντικής οργάνωσης Καλλιστώ- κατάφερε εύκολα να περάσει στο οδόστρωμα του αυτοκινητοδρόμου, ελλείψει των κατάλληλων προδιαγραφών του οδικού δικτύου, τα οποία θα μπορούσαν να εμποδίσουν τη διέλευση του άγριου ζώου. Υποσχέσεις για 2.587 ανεμογεννήτριες

Την εγκατάσταση 2.587 ανεμογεννητριών σε όλη τη χώρα προωθεί το Ειδικό Χωροταξικό Πλαίσιο για τις Ανανεώσιμες Πηγές Ενέργειας (ΑΠΕ), το οποίο ενέκρινε χθες η Κυβερνητική Επιτροπή.

Τον χειμώνα... καλοκαίρι κάνουν τα φώτα των πόλεων για τα φυτά. Στη φωτορρύπανση - τον υπερβολικό φωτισμό στις πόλεις- και όχι στην καλοκαιρία οφείλεται η παράξενη συμπεριφορά των φυτών που ανθίζουν εκτός εποχής ή «ξεχνούν» να ρίξουν τα φύλλα τους. Έρευνα που πραγματοποίησαν φοιτητές του Τμήματος Περιβάλλοντος του Πανεπιστημίου Αιγαίου, υπό την εποπτεία του καθηγητή κ. Ν. Τα «δημοτικά» ποδήλατα κατακτούν την Ευρώπη

ΣΕ ΜΙΑ ΕΥΡΩΠΗ με ολοένα εντονότερες οικολογικές ευαισθησίες, λένε πως υπάρχουν μόνο δύο είδη δημάρχων: Αυτοί που έχουν σύστημα ενοικίασης ποδηλάτων και αυτοί που θέλουν να αποκτήσουν. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, προγράμματα όπως το Velib, που εγκαινίασε το 2007 στο Παρίσι ο δήμαρχος Μπερτράν Ντελανοέ, φυτρώνουν σαν τα μανιτάρια αποκτώντας όλο και περισσότερους οπαδούς: Λυών, Ρεν, Ντύσελντορφ, Βαρκελώνη, Παμπλόνα, όλες αυτές οι πόλεις έχουν υποκύψει στη γοητεία του ποδηλάτου. Οικολογικό Πάρκο 1,15 εκατ. στρεμμάτων στον Πάρνωνα

ΟΙΚΟΛΟΓΙΚΟ ΠΑΡΚΟ Πάρνωνα- Μουστού που καλύπτει έκταση 1.150.000 στρεμμάτων θεσμοθετείται με Κοινή Υπουργική Απόφαση (ΚΥΑ), την οποία υπέγραψε χθες ο υπουργός ΠΕΧΩΔΕ Γιώργος Σουφλιάς. Europeans Form Renewable Energy Agency

A consortium of European governments is developing the world's first International Renewable Energy Agency.
The agency, known as IRENA, will serve as a global cheerleader for clean energy. It plans to offer technical, financial, and policy advice for governments worldwide, according to a joint announcement from Germany, Spain, and Denmark-the project's leaders. Read more...
