Vatican agrees to a carbon offset scheme

This summer the cardinals at the Vatican accepted an unusual donation from a Hungarian start-up called Klimafa: The company said it would plant trees to restore an ancient forest on a denuded island by the Tizsa River to offset the Vatican's carbon emissions.
The young trees, on a 15-hectare, or 37-acre, tract of land that will be renamed the "Vatican Climate Forest" will in theory absorb as much carbon dioxide as the Vatican makes through its various activities in 2007: driving cars, heating offices, lighting St. Peters Basilica at night. Read more...

Concern over gorilla 'executions'

Organic Farming Yields as Good or Better says Study

WASHINGTON - Organic farming can yield up to three times as much food as conventional farming in developing countries, and holds its own against standard methods in rich countries, US researchers said on Tuesday.

McDonald's puts oil to green use

McDonald's is to convert all its UK delivery vehicles to run on biodiesel, using the firm's supply of cooking oil. The fast-food chain has pledged to convert all its 155 vehicles by next year, starting with 45 lorries based at its distribution centre in Hampshire.
By using the fuel - made by combining cooking oil and rapeseed oil - the firm said it would save more than 1,650 tonnes of carbon every year. Read more...

Kινδύνευσαν ανθρώπινες ζωές στη Pαφήνα
Σε 10 χρόνια, τρεις μεγάλες πυρκαγιές
H TPITH μεγάλη πυρκαγιά στην Αττική μέσα σε 10 χρόνια και μάλιστα στην ίδια περιοχή, της Πεντέλης, είναι η χθεσινή που ξεκίνησε από τα Σκουφαίικα της Ραφήνας. Χιλιάδες καμένα στρέμματα δάσους, κατεστραμμένα σπίτια αλλά και νεκρούς άφησαν πίσω τους οι μεγάλες πυρκαγιές του 1995 και του 1998 στην Πεντέλη. H πυρκαγιά του 1995 είχε ξεσπάσει περίπου την ίδια περίοδο με τη χθεσινή: στις 21 Ιουλίου 1995. Επικρατούσαν και τότε πάρα πολύ ισχυροί άνεμοι. H φωτιά έκαψε 68.844 στρέμματα δάσους, διήρκεσε για ένα 24ωρο και μετέτρεψε σε κρανίου τόπο μια τεράστια έκταση από το Ντράφι, την Ανθούσα και το Νταού έως την Παλλήνη τον Γέρακα, το Πικέρμι και τη Νέα Μάκρη.
Παρόμοιες καταστροφές αλλά και έναν νεκρό είχε αφήσει πίσω της η μεγάλη πυρκαγιά του 1998. Είχε ξεσπάσει στις 3 Αυγούστου, αποτέφρωσε 75.685 στρέμματα δάσους αλλά και δεκάδες σπίτια στις περιοχές της Σταμάτας, στον Διόνυσο, την Ανθούσα και το Ντράφι. Μάλιστα, τότε οι φλόγες είχαν περάσει σε αρκετές περιοχές ακριβώς από τα ίδια σημεία όπου είχαν περάσει και το '95, αποτελειώνοντας έτσι ό,τι είχε απομείνει...

Despite 17 years of conservation measures, the northern spotted owl is still in trouble. The feds' recent draft spotted-owl protection plan instead vilifies the barred owl, a nonnative competitor and sometime predator to its spotted cousin. A central part of the proposal is that federal wildlife agents be allowed to "suppress" barred owls -- that is, take out hundreds of 'em with shotguns. The plan is "a deception to deflect the blame away from habitat destruction," says owl advocate Dominick DellaSala.

First UK biodiesel train launched

The UK's first train to run on biodiesel is going into service as part of an attempt to make rail travel more environmentally friendly. The Virgin Voyager has been modified to run on eco-friendly fuel and the company is aiming to convert more in the future.

Canada to face trial over global warming

Friends of the Earth Canada has launched a lawsuit against the Canadian government for its decision to abandon its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol, which the group claims violates Canadian law.The move came after the Canadian government announced that it was altering its policy and was now aiming for a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2006 levels by 2020, as opposed to the 6% by 2012 on 1990 levels demanded by the Kyoto Protocol.
