European Commission Aims to Cut Food Waste 50 Percent by 2020

Europe may be facing much larger problem than what to do with its food waste. But being pushed through the European parliament is a bill that will have widespread significance. That is because food waste accounts for one of the largest sources of overall waste going to landfills. Per year, the average person throws away 300 kg (660 lbs) per year, and of this, two thirds is still edible. MEPs are railing against what they see as unsustainable levels of waste. Read more...

Illegally Shipped Waste to Return to U.K.

When Brazilian port workers began inspecting the contents of a cargo ship from the U.K., they were surprised to find more than 1,400 tons of waste, labeled as recyclable plastics, included with the cargo.
The waste, packed in 89 shipping containers, was unloaded in three southern Brazilian ports and was said to contain batteries, computer parts, DVDs, cleaning product containers, clothes, shoes, old toys, baby diapers, food remains and medical waste, among other items. Read more...

A new EEA report 'Waste without borders in the EU' examines the increase in cross-border waste shipments and the drivers behind them. It also reveals that the number of reported illegal shipments of waste is increasing. But while the European Union can do better in tracking electronic waste as well as other hazardous and problematic "waste streams", almost all waste generated in the EU that needs to be disposed is in fact disposed within EU borders. The new EEA report is published in the week that European Ministers for the Environment discussed plans to support waste management and recycling industries. Read more...

New EU waste legislation approved

A new directive has been put in place following the decision of MEPs to adopt amendments to EU waste legislation. Member states will now be required to draw up binding waste disposal and recycling targets and adhere to them. Waste prevention targets will be considered by the European Commission in future, and incineration of waste will be classified as a recovery operation providing it meets certain energy efficiency criteria. EC pursues legal action in the Campania and Lazio regions of Italy

The European Commission is continuing legal action against Italy over two cases involving violations of EU waste legislation. The Commission is taking Italy to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) over the waste crisis that has plagued Naples and the Campania region. It is also sending Italy a first written warning for failing to comply in the Lazio region with an ECJ judgement that found it in breach of its obligations to adopt regional waste management plans. In this second case the Commission has the power to ask the Court to impose fines if Italy does not comply. Read more...
