Big rise in Pacific plastic waste

The quantity of small plastic fragments floating in the north-east Pacific Ocean has increased a hundred fold over the past 40 years. Scientists from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography documented the big rise when they trawled the waters off California. They were able to compare their plastic "catch" with previous data for the region. The group reports its findings in the journal Biology Letters. Read more...

Μικροσκοπικά σωματίδια πλαστικού, συνολικά γύρω στα 250 δισεκατομμύρια κομμάτια, επιπλέουν στα νερά της Μεσογείου, απειλώντας τα ζώα που τρέφονται με πλαγκτόν και γενικά όλο το τροφικό πλέγμα, προειδοποιούν θαλάσσιοι βιολόγοι που πραγματοποίησαν δειγματοληψίες. Τον περασμένο Ιούλιο, ερευνητική ομάδα από τη Γαλλία και το Βέλγιο συνέλεξε δείγματα νερού έξω από τις ακτές της Γαλλίας, της βόρειας Ιταλίας και της Ισπανίας, σε βάθος από 10 έως 15 εκατοστά. «Η χονδρική εκτίμηση είναι ότι υπάρχουν περίπου 250 δισ. μικροσωματίδια πλαστικού σε όλη τη Μεσόγειο» δήλωσε στο Γαλλικό Πρακτορείο ο Φρανσουά Γκαλγκανί, ερευνητής του Ifremer (Γαλλικό Ινστιτούτο για την Εξερεύνηση της Θάλασσας). EU votes to criminalise pollution at sea

The European Parliament yesterday (5 May) adopted a new directive that forces EU countries to introduce criminal penalties for maritime pollution, whether caused deliberately or by negligence. At their plenary session in Strasbourg, MEPs adopted the new directive by 588 votes in favour and 42 against, amid three abstentions.
The directive introduces compulsory criminal sanctions for serious cases of maritime pollution, and also forces member states to impose stringent penalties for minor cases if they are repeated, deliberately caused or the result of serious negligence. Read more...
