EU votes to criminalise pollution at sea

The European Parliament yesterday (5 May) adopted a new directive that forces EU countries to introduce criminal penalties for maritime pollution, whether caused deliberately or by negligence. At their plenary session in Strasbourg, MEPs adopted the new directive by 588 votes in favour and 42 against, amid three abstentions.
The directive introduces compulsory criminal sanctions for serious cases of maritime pollution, and also forces member states to impose stringent penalties for minor cases if they are repeated, deliberately caused or the result of serious negligence. Read more...

EU seal ban raises trade tensions with Canada

The European Union and Canada clashed on Tuesday after EU lawmakers voted to ban imports of seal products into the 27-nation bloc, prompting Ottawa to threaten action in the world's top trade court.
"If the ban adopted by the European Parliament fails to exempt humane and sustainable sealing, Canada pledged to launch a challenge at the World Trade Organisation, the global trade watchdog. If the EU imposes a trade ban on seal products it must contain an exemption for any country, like Canada, that has strict guidelines in place for humane and sustainable sealing practices," Canada's Trade Minister Stockwell Day said. MEPs reject watered-down airline emission targets

MEPs have declared a de facto war against national governments by maintaining their demands for strict emission reduction targets for Europe's rapidly growing aviation sector, despite ministers' insistence on a more industry-friendly approach.
The report, backed by members of Parliament[s environment committee in a second reading vote on 27 May, states that airlines operating in Europe should not be allowed to continue emitting the same levels of greenhouse gases as the period 2004-2006 after 2012 – as was proposed by the Council last April. Ποινικές κυρώσεις σε όσους μολύνουν το περιβάλλον υιοθέτησε το Ευρωκοινοβούλιο

Το Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοβούλιο υιοθέτησε την Τετάρτη οδηγία κατά των προσώπων και των εταιρειών που προκαλούν περιβαλλοντικές καταστροφές, οι οποίοι πλέον θα έχουν ποινικές ευθύνες, δεσμευτικές στο σύνολο των χωρών-μελών, ενώ θα βαρύνονται με το έργο του καθαρισμού της μόλυνσης. Είναι η πρώτη φορά που το Ευρωπαϊκό Κονοβούλιο θεσμοθετεί ποινικές κυρώσεις που θα αφορούν το σύνολο των 27 χωρών-μελών.
