Power lines 'invisible' to birds

Birds fly into power lines because they have "blind spots" in their field of vision, according to new research. Vision experts found that cranes, bustards and storks were unable to see obstacles straight ahead when they tilted their heads downwards in flight.Birds often look down during flight to find fellow birds as well as nesting and feeding areas, say the researchers.
The new evidence suggests that the problem cannot be prevented by altering the appearance of power lines.Read more...

There’s safety in numbers for cyclists

In U.S. cities, there are a lot more people out bicycling than just a few years ago. You might reasonably think that the bicycle crash rate would skyrocket as more people, from wobbly new riders to the outright safety-averse, take to the streets on two wheels.
It's a fine, common-sense assumption -- that happens to be wrong.
Research has been steadily showing, actually, that the more people are out there riding bicycles, the safer bicycling becomes. As ridership goes up, crash rates stay flat. It's happening in Portland (see page 11 of this report [PDF]). It's happening in New York City. Read more...

Η διαρροή στην πλατφόρμα πετρελαίου Deepwater Horizon στον Κόλπο του Μεξικού έχει στοιχίσει στην εταιρεία περισσότερα από 750 εκατομμύρια ευρώ, ανακοίνωσε σήμερα η BP, που ευθύνεται για τη χειρότερη διαρροή πετρελαίου στην ιστορία των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών. Σύμφωνα με τη διευθύντρια του Αμερικανικού Ινστιτούτου Γεωλογικών Ερευνών (USGS), από την πετρελαιοπηγή της BP διέρρεαν στον Κόλπο του Μεξικού από 12.000 έως και 19.000 βαρέλια πετρελαίου την ημέρα (2 με 3 εκατομμύρια λίτρα), τα οποία έχουν ήδη μολύνει περισσότερα από 160 χιλιόμετρα στην ακτογραμμή της Λουιζιάνα, καταστροφή χειρότερη και από αυτή που είχε προκαλέσει το τάνκερ Exxon Valdez στην Αλάσκα, τo 1989. US fears ease over major oil spill from sunken rig

The US Coast Guard says that no oil appears to be leaking from a rig that sank off Louisiana on Thursday. Crews will continue to monitor the rig closely amid concerns over a possible environmental disaster. Read more...

Disaster in Black Sea as storm sinks tanker

The Black Sea region suffered its worst environmental disaster in years after an oil tanker sank in stormy weather last night. The bodies of five seamen have been recovered and up to 18 are still missing after the storm struck 10 ships in the Strait of Kerch, which links the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
Crewmen aboard the Russian oil tanker, the Volganeft-139, were rescued. It split in two and spilled at least 1,300 tonnes of oil. The severe weather prevented emergency workers from collecting the oil, which authorities said was sinking to the seabed. Read more...
