Τα καλά νέα είναι ότι έπειτα από μέρες έκτακτης εργασίας, τα τοιχώματα της δεξαμενής του εργοστασίου της δυτικής Ουγγαρίας από το οποίο διέρρευσε ένα εκατομμύριο κυβικά μέτρα τοξικής λάσπης, στέκονται ακόμη όρθια. Τα κακά νέα είναι ότι η κυβέρνηση πιστεύει πως η δεξαμενή έχει καταστραφεί τόσο, που μια νέα ολέθρια διαρροή είναι πιθανόν να συμβεί ανά πάσα στιγμή. Διαβάστε περισσότερα...

Croatia and Hungary to establish Europe´s largest river protected area

Croatia and Hungary signed today a declaration to establish a Trans-Boundary UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that will protect their shared biodiversity hotspot along the Mura, Drava and Danube Rivers. This paves the way to create Europe’s largest river protection area. Read more...
Ministers back right to refuse GM crop cultivation

Attempts by the European Commission to force Austria and Hungary to allow the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) maize on their territory were rejected yet again by EU environment ministers yesterday (2 March). Environment ministers from the 27-member bloc found a qualified majority against a Commission proposal to force Hungary and Austria to repeal bans on growing genetically modified MON 810 maize, which is developed and marketed by US company Monsanto.
