California to Mandate Recycling for Businesses, Apartments

California residents not living in permanent housing may no longer have to deal with the frustration of searching for recycling options. The state’s Integrated Waste Management Board (IWMB) is formulating a program meant to encourage businesses, apartment complexes and mobile home parks to institute recycling. The mandatory recycling directive would most likely set goals for cities and counties, allowing them to implement individual programs as long as they comply. A draft proposal will be released this year, and state law requires the plan to be implemented no later than Jan. 1, 2012. Read more...

Ένα ιστορικό νόμο για την περικοπή των εκπομπών διοξειδίου του άνθρακα από τα καύσιμα των αυτοκινήτων με παράλληλη ώθηση της αγοράς προς τα καθαρότερά εναλλακτικά καύσιμα, υιοθέτησε η Καλιφόρνια. Στον πυρήνα της ρύθμισης είναι οι νέες προδιαγραφές που απαιτούν από τα διυλιστήρια, τους παραγωγούς και τους εισαγωγείς των καυσίμων κίνησης να μειώσουν την περιεκτικότητα του άνθρακα κατά 10% έως το 2020 και περισσότερο αργότερα. California First State to Adopt Green Building Code

The California Building Standards Commission announced on Friday the unanimous adoption of a statewide 'green' building code, the first in the nation.
The new standards will call for a 20% improvement in water use efficiency for both residential and commercial plumbing fixtures as well as target a 50% increase in conservation for water used in landscaping. Read more...

In an ambitious move, a Californian utility plans to create a massive, distributed “powerplant” by installing a total of 2 square miles of solar celss on the roofs of businesses. Southern California Edison plans to install 250 megawatts’ worth of solar power, generating enough electricity to power 162,000 homes. Read more...

California sues EPA to get tough CO2 rules on cars

California sued the federal government on Thursday to force a decision about whether the state can impose the nation's first greenhouse gas emission standards for cars and light trucks.
More than a dozen other states are poised to follow California's lead if it is granted the waiver from federal law, presenting a challenge to automakers who would have to adapt to a patchwork of regulations.
"Our position is that it's time for EPA to either act or get out of the way," said Lee Moore, a spokesman for New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram. Read more...
