The wrong owl? In order to 'protect' the spotted owl US federal agencies plan to 'supress' the barred owl

Despite 17 years of conservation measures, the northern spotted owl is still in trouble. The feds' recent draft spotted-owl protection plan instead vilifies the barred owl, a nonnative competitor and sometime predator to its spotted cousin. A central part of the proposal is that federal wildlife agents be allowed to "suppress" barred owls -- that is, take out hundreds of 'em with shotguns. The plan is "a deception to deflect the blame away from habitat destruction," says owl advocate Dominick DellaSala.

First UK biodiesel train launched

The UK's first train to run on biodiesel is going into service as part of an attempt to make rail travel more environmentally friendly. The Virgin Voyager has been modified to run on eco-friendly fuel and the company is aiming to convert more in the future.
The train uses a blended fuel which is 20% biodiesel - to reduce CO2 emissions without harming the engine. Read more...

G8 leaders agree to climate deal

Leaders of the G8 nations have agreed to seek "substantial" cuts in emissions in an effort to tackle climate change. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the G8 would negotiate within a UN framework to seek a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol by the end of 2009.
No mandatory target was set for the cuts, but Mrs Merkel's preference for a 50% emissions cut by the year 2050 was included in the agreed statement. Read more...

Canada to face trial over global warming

Friends of the Earth Canada has launched a lawsuit against the Canadian government for its decision to abandon its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol, which the group claims violates Canadian law.The move came after the Canadian government announced that it was altering its policy and was now aiming for a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2006 levels by 2020, as opposed to the 6% by 2012 on 1990 levels demanded by the Kyoto Protocol. NY yellow taxicabs 'to go green'

New York's yellow taxis will go hybrid in five years, in an effort to cut air pollution and tackle climate change, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said. Launched in November by Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai of Kenya at a major U.N. climate meeting in Kenya, the "Billion Tree" campaign aims to roll back deforestation that is a top contributor to carbon emissions blamed for global warming.

Poland and Czech Republic to sue over CO2 caps

"Οι STREETPANTHERS είμαστε μια παρέα Σαλονικιών που αρχίσαμε να “βγαίνουμε στην παρανομία" στα τέλη του 2006, όταν η ζωή των πεζών στην πόλη είχε φτάσει στο απροχώρητο. Έτσι, αποφασίσαμε "με πόνο καρδιάς" ότι:

- Δεν αρκούσε να τσατιζόμαστε βλέποντας τους παράνομα παρκαρισμένους πάνω σε πεζοδρόμια, διαβάσεις και πεζόδρομους.

- Δεν αρκούσε να φοβόμαστε όταν μας κυνηγούσαν οι μηχανές ακόμα και πάνω στα πεζοδρόμια.

- Δεν αρκούσε να κοιτάζουμε ανήμποροι όταν αυτοκίνητα και μηχανές έκαναν σιγά-σιγά κατάληψη στο μοναδικό χώρο περιπάτου, το πλακόστρωτο της νέας παραλίας.

- Δεν αρκούμασταν να περιμένουμε πότε η πολιτεία –το κράτος, ο δήμος, η αστυνομία– θα ξυπνούσαν. Καταλάβαμε πως με τα "θα-θα" θα φτάναμε να γεράσουμε και ακόμα θα περιμέναμε τα πράγματα να διορθωθούν. Έπρεπε να κάνουμε κάτι". Διαβάστε τι έκαναν....(να αγιάσει το χέρι τους!)

The world’s fastest-growing beverage is a boon to the industry but a bust for the environment and for the more than 1 billion people worldwide who lack access to clean drinking water, according to a new Vital Signs Update from the Worldwatch Institute.
Excessive withdrawal of natural mineral or spring water to produce bottled water has threatened local streams and groundwater, and the product consumes significant amounts of energy in production and shipping. Millions of tons of oil-derived plastics, mostly polyethylene terephthalate (PET), are used to make the water bottles, most of which are not recycled. Each year, about 2 million tons of PET bottles end up in landfills in the United States; in 2005, the national recycling rate for PET was only 23.1 percent, far below the 39.7 percent rate achieved a decade earlier. City birds sing for silent nights

Robins in urban areas are singing at night because it is too noisy during the day, researchers suggest. Scientists from the University of Sheffield say there is a link between an area's daytime noise levels and the number of birds singing at night.
Until now, light pollution had been blamed because it was thought that street lights tricked the birds into thinking it was still daytime. The findings are published in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters. Read more...

Η Ρωσία έχει αρχίσει την κατασκευή του πρώτου πλωτού πυρηνικού σταθμού παραγωγής ενέργειας στον κόσμο παρά τις προειδοποιήσεις περιβαλλοντολόγων ότι υπάρχει κίνδυνος να προκαλέσει καταστροφή.

Το σκάφος των 160 εκατ. ευρώ είναι ο πρώτος από τους επτά πυρηνικούς σταθμούς που η Μόσχα υποστηρίζει ότι θα φέρουν ζωτικούς ενεργειακούς πόρους στις απομακρυσμένες περιφέρειες της Ρωσίας, καθώς και σε ξένες αγορές. Η ανεξέλεγκτη άντληση (σήμερα αδρεύονται και οι ξερικές καλλιέργειες) χωρίς ουσιαστική πολιτική ελέγχου (υδρόμετρα και μηχανισμός ελέγχου στις περιφέρειες), χωρίς υδρολογικές μελέτες, χωρίς αυστηρό θεσμικό πλαίσιο, η χώρα προχωράει χωρίς ουσιαστική πολιτική για τη διαχείριση των υπόγειων νερών κατασπαταλώντας τις πηγές της που κινδυνεύουν με υφαλμύρωση. Το εν ισχύι νομοθετικό πλαίσιο δεν λύνει προβλήματα, η επιστημονική κοινότητα είναι διχασμένη αλλά και παραγκωνισμένη, ενώ περισσότερες από 170.000 γεωτρήσεις κινδυνεύουν να σπαταλήσουν τα πολύτιμα αποθέματα νερού που για δεκαετίες συγκέντρωνε η φύση στα έγκατά της. Warming Thins Herd for Canada's Seal Hunt

Hunters and animal rights activists face off on the ice this week as Canada's annual seal hunt begins, but a succession of unusually warm winters in the Gulf of St. Lawrence already has drowned thousands of the animals.
Canadian authorities reduced the quotas on the harp seal hunt by about 20 percent after overflights showed large numbers of seal pups were lost to thin and melting ice in the lower part of the gulf, off Prince Edward Island. Read more...

San Francisco supermrkets vote to ban plastic shopping bags

Paper or plastic? Not any more in San Francisco.
The city's Board of Supervisors approved groundbreaking legislation Tuesday to outlaw plastic checkout bags at large supermarkets in about six months and large chain pharmacies in about a year. The ordinance, sponsored by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, is the first such law in any city in the United States and has been drawing global scrutiny this week. Read more...
