Plastic Bag Makers Aim for 40 Percent Recycled Content in 2015

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Plastic bag manufacturers working with the American Chemistry Council have set a goal to increase the recycled content of plastic bags to 40 percent by 2015.
The Full Circle Recycling Initiative, developed by the Progressive Bag Affiliates of the American Chemistry Council, would require a $50 million investment from industry members to increase the collection of bags and update manufacturing processes. Read more...

Plastic Found in One-Third of Leatherback Turtles

A new study looked at necropsy reports of more than 400 leatherbacks that have died since 1885 and found plastic in the digestive systems of more than a third of the animals. Besides plastic bags, the turtles had swallowed fishing lines, balloon fragments, spoons, candy wrappers and more. Plastic was probably not the cause of death in most cases. Read more...

ΣΕ ΑΝΑΚΥΚΛΩΣΙΜΕΣ τσάντες θα βάζουν από σήμερα τα ψώνια τους όσοι πολίτες πηγαίνουν σε μεγάλες αλυσίδες σούπερ μάρκετ στην Αθήνα. Ο Δήμος της πόλης συμφώνησε με εννέα αλυσίδες σούπερ μάρκετ και με καταστήματα πώλησης μικρογευμάτων, να αντικαταστήσουν την παραδοσιακή πλαστική σακούλα και από εδώ και στο εξής να δίνουν στους πελάτες τους τσάντες που είναι φιλικές προς το περιβάλλον. Top China plastic bag maker closes amid green drive

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's largest plastic bag maker has closed following a state-led environmental campaign discouraging plastics use, Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday.
China launched a surprise crackdown on plastic bags in January, banning production of ultra-thin bags and forbidding its supermarkets and shops from handing out free carrier bags from June 1.
Suiping Huaqiang Plastic Co, owned by Guangzhou-based Nanqiang Plastic Industrial Ltd. and employing 20,000 workers stopped production in mid-January. Read more...

Brown gets tough with UK retail over plastic bags

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Friday warned retailers they had to start charging shoppers for the 13 billion plastic bags they currently get for free each year or the government would step in to force them. "I am convinced we need to act -- and the time to act is now," Brown wrote in the Daily Mail newspaper. "And I want to make clear that if government compulsion is needed to make the change, we will take the necessary steps." Read more...

Free Reusable Bags at Whole Foods

Whole Foods Markets from New Jersey to Virginia began giving away one free reusable bag per customer yesterday to encourage shoppers to “BYOB” — Bring Your Own Bag.
The bag had already caught my eye, not only because it’s so cheerful and colorful, but also because it’s made from 80% post-consumer waste. Plus, it’s got a washable surface and actually seems more ample inside than the standard paper grocery bag. Read more...

Από την 1η Ιανουαρίου του 2008 έχει ξεκινήσει στον Δήμο Παξών μια σημαντική προσπάθεια -κατόπιν δημοτικής απόφασης- για την αποφυγή χρησιμοποίησης της συμβατικής πλαστικής σακούλας. «Μέσα από τον τοπικό Τύπο της Κέρκυρας και την εφημερίδα του Δήμου ενημερώθηκαν οι κάτοικοι και κυρίως οι καταστηματάρχες, οι οποίοι καλούνται να αντικαταστήσουν σταδιακά τις συμβατικές με χάρτινες ή οποιουδήποτε άλλου τύπου ανακυκλώσιμες σακούλες», εξηγεί ο δήμαρχος Σπύρος Μπογδάνος. Ενώ από την 1η Ιανουαρίου του 2010 στη Γαλλία θα χρησιμοποιούνται -βάσει νόμου- από τα καταστήματα μόνον οι εναλλακτικές σακούλες.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China launched a surprise crackdown on plastic bags on Tuesday, banning production of ultra-thin bags and forbidding its supermarkets and shops from handing out free carriers from June 1.
China uses too many of the bags and fails to dispose of them properly, wasting valuable oil and littering the country, China's cabinet, the State Council, said in a notice posted on the central government Web site (http://www.gov.cn/). Read more...
