Greenpeace International has commissioned a new investigation that delves even further into the hazardous chemicals used in the production of high street fashion.

Spurred on by the success of Greenpeace's Detox Campaign, which exposed the links between textile manufacturing facilities using toxic chemicals and water pollution, the investigation was expanded to include 20 global fashion brands – including Armani, Levi's and Zara – as well as more hazardous chemicals. Lego Drops APP Packaging After Greenpeace Campaign

Lego has bowed to pressure from Greenpeace, reportedly agreeing to drop supplier Asia Pulp and Paper, and the toy company says it will only use packaging material certified by the Forest Stewardship Council from now on. The environmental group last month accused Lego, Hasbro, Mattel and Disney of using packaging material sourced from trees cleared out of the Indonesian rainforest. Greenpeace pressed all the toy companies to stop buying paper products from APP – which the group called the worst forest offender in Indonesia – and any companies connected to APP. The non-profit also called on the companies to implement new sustainable procurement policies for purchase of all pulp and paper products. Read more...

Greenland's prime minister lambasts Greenpeace for raiding Arctic oil rig

The prime minister of Greenland has accused Greenpeace of threatening the safety of oil workers and the environment after four activists forced a controversial deep-sea exploration rig in the Arctic to shut down today. Just before dawn, the four campaigners used three high-speed inflatable boats to evade the Danish navy before clambering on to the British-owned rig and slinging mountaineering-type platforms beneath it about 15 metres above the sea. The raid forced the Edinburgh-based oil exploration firm Cairn Energy to suspend drilling, escalating tensions between the Greenlandic government and Greenpeace. Read more...

Greenpeace bids to turn Japan against whaling

TOKYO (Reuters) - Greenpeace launched a campaign to turn Japan against whaling on Tuesday, with directors of the group from around the world delivering a letter to Prime Minister Taro Aso, urging him to halt the hunts.
The letter handover came weeks after Japan's whaling fleet set off for the Antarctic for an annual hunt aimed at catching about 900 whales, which Tokyo says is carried out for scientific research purposes.

In a break with past practice, Greenpeace is focusing on a campaign to try to change Japanese domestic opinion this year, rather than send a ship to chase the fleet in the Southern Ocean, which caused diplomatic ruffles last year. Read more...

Greenpeace Slams iPhone Over Hazardous Chemicals

Greenpeace says Apple’s new iPhone contains a number of hazardous chemicals, InformationWeek reports.
“Apple is not making early progress toward its 2008 commitment to phase out all uses of these materials, even in entirely new product lines,” Greenpeace said in a report published Monday. The group said the iPhone contains chlorinated plastic polyvinyl chloride and “brominated flame retardants” that can be harmful to the environment. Read more...
