Campaigners say the UN must take urgent action to protect six World Heritage sites from the impact of climate change. The sites the groups want added to the "in danger" list are: Great Barrier Reef, Australia; Sagarmatha National Park (which includes Mount Everest), Nepal; Belize Barrier Reef, Belize; Huascaran National Park, Peru ; Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, US/Canada border; Blue Mountains, Australia. Despite 17 years of conservation measures, the northern spotted owl is still in trouble. The feds' recent draft spotted-owl protection plan instead vilifies the barred owl, a nonnative competitor and sometime predator to its spotted cousin. A central part of the proposal is that federal wildlife agents be allowed to "suppress" barred owls -- that is, take out hundreds of 'em with shotguns. The plan is "a deception to deflect the blame away from habitat destruction," says owl advocate Dominick DellaSala.

Παρότι η ΕΕ-15 παρουσίασε μείωση των εκπομπών αερίων του θερμοκηπίου κατά 2% σε σχέση με το έτος αναφοράς, η Ελλάδα παρουσίασε αύξηση +25.4% ("προηγούνται" η Ισπανία +52.3% και η Πορτογαλία, +40.4%). Σημειώνεται ότι ο Ελληνικός στόχος για το 2012 είναι +25%.

First UK biodiesel train launched

The UK's first train to run on biodiesel is going into service as part of an attempt to make rail travel more environmentally friendly. The Virgin Voyager has been modified to run on eco-friendly fuel and the company is aiming to convert more in the future.
The train uses a blended fuel which is 20% biodiesel - to reduce CO2 emissions without harming the engine. Read more...

G8 leaders agree to climate deal

Leaders of the G8 nations have agreed to seek "substantial" cuts in emissions in an effort to tackle climate change. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the G8 would negotiate within a UN framework to seek a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol by the end of 2009.
No mandatory target was set for the cuts, but Mrs Merkel's preference for a 50% emissions cut by the year 2050 was included in the agreed statement. Read more...

Canada to face trial over global warming

Friends of the Earth Canada has launched a lawsuit against the Canadian government for its decision to abandon its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol, which the group claims violates Canadian law.The move came after the Canadian government announced that it was altering its policy and was now aiming for a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2006 levels by 2020, as opposed to the 6% by 2012 on 1990 levels demanded by the Kyoto Protocol.
