NY yellow taxicabs 'to go green'

New York's yellow taxis will go hybrid in five years, in an effort to cut air pollution and tackle climate change, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said. Hybrids run on petrol and electricity, therefore emitting less exhaust. The new vehicles are to be phased in immediately, replacing the current fleet which numbers about 13,000. Read more...

U.N. wins pledges to plant a billion trees

NAIROBI, May 22 (Reuters) - The United Nations has received pledges to plant more than a billion trees in a drive to help fight climate change and poverty, it said on Tuesday.
Launched in November by Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai of Kenya at a major U.N. climate meeting in Kenya, the "Billion Tree" campaign aims to roll back deforestation that is a top contributor to carbon emissions blamed for global warming.

Poland and Czech Republic to sue over CO2 caps

"Οι STREETPANTHERS είμαστε μια παρέα Σαλονικιών που αρχίσαμε να “βγαίνουμε στην παρανομία" στα τέλη του 2006, όταν η ζωή των πεζών στην πόλη είχε φτάσει στο απροχώρητο. Έτσι, αποφασίσαμε "με πόνο καρδιάς" ότι:

- Δεν αρκούσε να τσατιζόμαστε βλέποντας τους παράνομα παρκαρισμένους πάνω σε πεζοδρόμια, διαβάσεις και πεζόδρομους.

- Δεν αρκούσε να φοβόμαστε όταν μας κυνηγούσαν οι μηχανές ακόμα και πάνω στα πεζοδρόμια.

- Δεν αρκούσε να κοιτάζουμε ανήμποροι όταν αυτοκίνητα και μηχανές έκαναν σιγά-σιγά κατάληψη στο μοναδικό χώρο περιπάτου, το πλακόστρωτο της νέας παραλίας.

- Δεν αρκούμασταν να περιμένουμε πότε η πολιτεία –το κράτος, ο δήμος, η αστυνομία– θα ξυπνούσαν. Καταλάβαμε πως με τα "θα-θα" θα φτάναμε να γεράσουμε και ακόμα θα περιμέναμε τα πράγματα να διορθωθούν. Έπρεπε να κάνουμε κάτι". Διαβάστε τι έκαναν....(να αγιάσει το χέρι τους!)

Emissions of climate-changing greenhouse gases (GHG) decreased between 2004 and 2005, according to preliminary data from a forthcoming EEA report. The report, 'Annual European Community greenhouse gas inventory 1990-2005 and inventory report 2007', was submitted to the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as the European Community’s official submission on 14 April. Αν και συννεφιασμένη για πολλές μέρες, η χώρα της Βορείου Ευρώπης είναι σήμερα μακράν ο μεγαλύτερος παραγωγός ηλιακής ενέργειας στον κόσμο, μπροστά από άλλα προηγμένα κράτη όπως η Ιαπωνία, η Ελβετία, η Ολλανδία και κυρίως μπροστά από όλες τις χώρες που τις λούζει ο ήλιος. Κρυφός στόχος της: να κυριαρχήσει στη ραγδαία αναπτυσσόμενη αγορά φωτοβολταϊκών συστημάτων.Η μισή περίπου ηλεκτρική ενέργεια που παρήχθη σε όλον τον κόσμο από τον ήλιο πέρυσι ήταν γερμανική, ενώ η χώρα φιλοξενεί σήμερα 15 από τα 20 μεγαλύτερα φωτοβολταϊκά εργοστάσια του κόσμου. The syndicates gather ivory in Africa for export to East Asian countries.

Bottled Water Pricey in More Ways than One

The world’s fastest-growing beverage is a boon to the industry but a bust for the environment and for the more than 1 billion people worldwide who lack access to clean drinking water, according to a new Vital Signs Update from the Worldwatch Institute.
Excessive withdrawal of natural mineral or spring water to produce bottled water has threatened local streams and groundwater, and the product consumes significant amounts of energy in production and shipping. Millions of tons of oil-derived plastics, mostly polyethylene terephthalate (PET), are used to make the water bottles, most of which are not recycled. Each year, about 2 million tons of PET bottles end up in landfills in the United States; in 2005, the national recycling rate for PET was only 23.1 percent, far below the 39.7 percent rate achieved a decade earlier.
