Η Ευρώπη μειώνει τα απορρίμματά της

Το Ευρωκοινοβούλιο ψήφισε νέα οδηγία-πλαίσιο για τα απόβλητα την περασμένη Τρίτη, με ευρύτατη μάλιστα πλειοψηφία. Το πρώτο σημαντικό μήνυμα της οδηγίας είναι ότι καθορίζει πέντε βήματα για την αντιμετώπιση του προβλήματος, τα οποία ιεραρχεί αυστηρά με βάση το όφελος για το περιβάλλον. Οι στόχοι, όπως διατυπώθηκαν, είναι:
1. Πρόληψη και μείωση των αποβλήτων 2. Επαναχρησιμοποίηση 3. Ανακύκλωση 4. Αλλα μέτρα ανάκτησης 5. Περιβαλλοντικώς ασφαλής διάθεση των αποβλήτων

Για να ενεργοποιηθεί η οδηγία πρέπει να εγκριθεί από το Συμβούλιο Υπουργών. Διαβάστε περισσότερα...

Μύθοι για την οικολογική κρίση

Με την ευκαιρία της αναβάθμισης της οικολογικής κρίσης σε παγκόσμιο πρωτοσέλιδο θέμα που προκάλεσε η δημοσίευση της έκθεσης της Διακυβερνητικής Ομάδας Κλιματικής Αλλαγής (IPCC), μια ολόκληρη μυθολογία αναπτύχθηκε στα διεθνή ΜΜΕ για τα αίτια και τους τρόπους ξεπεράσματος της οικολογικής κρίσης. Τη μυθολογία αυτή αναπαράγουν όχι μόνον οι πολιτικές και οικονομικές ελίτ, αλλά και η ρεφορμιστική Αριστερά και Οικολογία, μέχρι και «ελευθεριακοί» αναλυτές, που διακηρύσσουν ότι «η κρίση ανήκει σε όλους» (κυβερνήσεις και κοινωνία πολιτών). Το 1970 η λίμνη Κορώνεια έφτανε τα 8,5 μέτρα βάθος, σήμερα μόλις μετά βίας σε ορισμένα σημεία φτάνει το 1,20. Τριγύρω λασπότοπος. Ψάρια, σχεδόν ανύπαρκτα. «Πάει η λίμνη, πέθανε», λένε κάτοικοι της περιοχής με θλίψη, ίσως και με κάποια ενοχή καθώς γνωρίζουν ότι μεγάλο μέρος της ευθύνης έχουν οι περίπου 2,5 χιλιάδες γεωτρήσεις απ' όπου αρδεύουν τα χωράφια τους. 'Doomsday' vault design unveiled

The final design for a "doomsday" vault that will house seeds from all known varieties of food crops has been unveiled by the Norwegian government. The Svalbard International Seed Vault will be built into a mountainside on a remote island near the North Pole. The vault aims to safeguard the world's agriculture from future catastrophes, such as nuclear war, asteroid strikes and climate change. Construction begins in March, and the seed bank is scheduled to open in 2008. Read more...

Condom ads used in green campaign

BBC News

Poster adverts showing condoms symbolising protection against pollution harmful to the environment are being launched by green activists. The government-funded Friends of the Earth adverts show a coal station chimney, a car exhaust and an aeroplane engine covered by a condom.
Condoms were used to illustrate the message that climate change can be stopped by human actions. The campaign is being launched at 30 English universities. Read more...

Scientists offered cash to dispute climate study

Scientists and economists have been offered $10,000 each by a lobby group funded by one of the world's largest oil companies to undermine a major climate change report due to be published today. Letters sent by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), an ExxonMobil-funded thinktank with close links to the Bush administration, offered the payments for articles that emphasise the shortcomings of a report from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Τέταρτη παγκοσμίως στην αύξηση εκπομπής αερίων του θερμοκηπίου, στο όνομα μιας εξαιρετικά ρυπογόνας (υπ)ανάπτυξης. Η χώρα μας είναι ήδη στην τέταρτη θέση παγκοσμίως όσον αφορά την αύξηση εκπομπής αερίων του θερμοκηπίου (μαζί με τον Καναδά), σημειώνοντας μεγέθυνση 26,6% από το 1990 ώς το 2004! Καθώς ο πλανήτης όλος κρατά την ανάσα του μπροστά στην απειλή της ολοκληρωτικής διαταραχής του κλίματος, η Ελλάδα αναδεικνύεται ως μια ενεργειακά σπάταλη και ιδιαίτερα ρυπογόνα οικονομία. Oscar nominations for Climate Change

An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore's film on the perils of global warming, scored two Oscar nominations Tuesday — for best documentary feature and best original song. While he is not technically a nominee — the film's director, Davis Guggenheim, won the nod, as did singer Melissa Etheridge for the song I Need to Wake Up — Gore said he was "thrilled" that his movie was honored. London Olympics 2012 – going for green?

The organisers of the London 2012 Olympics want the games to be "the greenest in history", but critics say that their plans do not go far enough.

The organisers have set the following environmental targets:

The Olympic village will be 25% more energy-efficient and carbon emissions will be reduced by 50% for the whole development compared with current building regulations;
renewable energy wlll provide 20% of the energy for the Olympic Park and Village;
20% less water than average will be used by the Olympic village;
20% of the materials used to construct the venues and 90% of demolished buildings will be reused or recycled, and;
50 km of new cycling routes and 30km of new walking routes will be built. Read more...

Brussels presses for greener fuel

The European Commission has announced plans to force energy companies to produce greener fuels. It says it will propose amendments to a directive on fuel quality, which will require a 10% cut in the CO2 released during production and use of the fuel. The changes would make companies use more biofuel, and develop greener biofuels where the production process results in lower CO2 emissions. Read more...
